Death In The Streets:

    Cause of death may have been erroneously reported through informal verbal autopsies and we were unable to ascertain data on who provided the cause of death data to the community advocate. Preliminary estimates suggest 4–6% prevalence among street-connected young people in western Kenya , exceeding the National prevalence among youth 15–24 (2.1%) , and the prevalence found among young people in western Kenya .

    In this study, the bulk of deceased street-connected children who were HIV-positive didn't enroll in care at AMPATH or didn't return for care after an initial visit. We could not assess the accuracy of the information ascertained in the verbal autopsy or if it was collected in a standardized manner prior to 2013.

Due to street-connected young people’s marginalization and discrimination as juvenile delinquents , it is likely that in many cases they may be targeted as the perpetrators’ of a crime they didn't commit, highlighting the necessity to uphold street children’s rights to protection from harm and non-discrimination.

    The San Francisco medical examiner’s office has not issued a final cause of death, but Robert Foster said hospital officials told him Perry had died of a heroin overdose. Children in street circumstances have the proper to health and access healthcare (CRC Article 24), and our findings suggest there could also be significant barriers to accessing care given the low uptake of registration and retention in care for HIV positive decedents.
